Laser Tattoo Removal

What is Laser Tattoo Removal?
Tattoos are a series of ink deposits deep within the skin designed to last forever. Early methods of tattoo removal carried a high risk of scarring, pain and were not very effective. The introduction of Q-switch laser has greatly improved the process allowing Dermal Therapists to remove most tattoos with a high degree of success and very low risk of scarring. The Q-switch laser is the gold standard laser for tattoo removal. The laser targets the tattoo with a very specific wavelength of light energy. The light energy gently vibrates and shatters the tattoo ink into micro-particles that are eventually eliminated through the body’s natural processes.
Which tattoo inks can be treated?
Multi coloured tattoos, including dark colours, red, orange, green, sky blue and yellow. Dark blue, black and red inks will respond the best. Orange and purples usually fade well. Green, sky blue and yellow are the most difficult to remove and often require additional treatments to produce significant fading.
What are the desired results?
After the first treatment, you will notice a temporary whitening of the treated area. Over time, the tattoo will fade and the skin returns to normal colour. Lasers will commonly eliminate 95% of the tattoo. Treatments are successful for most clients but individual results may vary. Treatment is most successful on fair skin, clients with darker skin may require more treatments. Tattoos with heavy layering may require more treatments. Tattoos located on distal extremities (feet/ hands) may require more treatments.
Is it painful?
By cooling the skin first with cool air, most patients say the pulses of light feel similar to snaps of a small rubber band on the skin followed by feeling of warmth.
What are the side effects?
Redness and swelling up to 12 – 48 hours
Scabbing is common
What are the potential risks?
Approximately 30% of clients may see darkening or lightening of the treated area that will usually resolve in 6 - 12 months.
Clients who don’t wear sunscreen are at high risk of pigment changes.
Pinpoint bleeding/bruising or blistering can occur.
Infection though rare can lead to scarring.
Allergic reaction to the ink (generally very rare).
What are the pre and post care instructions?
An antibacterial gel will be applied after treatment as the area must be kept clean. If scabs form it is important that you do not pick or scratch them.
How many treatments are needed?
Most clients will undertake between 6 – 12 treatments to achieve the best results every 6 – 8 weeks. Some clients will require more than 12 treatments due to but not limited to the following:
  • An individual’s immune response
  • Reactions that may occur throughout the course of their treatments
  • New tattoos
  • Colour of tattoo
  • Type of ink used
  • Position of tattoo on distal areas
  • Layering of tattoo ink
What skincare is recommended?
SPF 30+
Laser Aid
Are there any conditions where Tattoo Removal is not recommended?
  • Roaccutane
  • Retin A
  • Keloid scarring
  • Pregnancy
  • Tanned skin
